Why 1980’s Toyota Pickup Truck Beds ALWAYS Rust

These 1980’s Toyota Pickup Truck beds do not hold up to moisture and especially road salt. Instead of being one solid piece, like the side of the cab, the bed side is actually made out of two pieces. The inside of the bed has removable panels, which are not sealed at the bottom. So water, salt, and dirt gets trapped behind them and holds moisture on all the spot welded seams, which causes these beds to start rusting from the inside out. Rust can be eating away back behind the panels for a long time. By the time it makes its way to the outside and you see those first couple of rust bubbles under the paint at the seam, it’s already too late.
